Crab and Shrimp Boil Recipe

For Valentine's dinner this year, my husband and I decided to make a Louisiana style Crab and Shrimp Boil. This is a delicious dinner which is simple to make but it does require the use of many dinner napkins to eat! The spice mix for the boil is easy to purchase in the USA and is known as Zatarians Crab and Shrimp Boil Mix. For those who live in Canada we have found a homemade spice mix version listed at the bottom of the recipe. This recipe is just a guideline so feel free to vary your ingredients.

After bringing a large pot of water to a boil, add spice mix, a couple of cut up lemons and let boil a few minutes.

Then add:

Crab in the shell (any kind, whole or pieces)
Corn on the cob
Whole mushrooms
Potatoes (small)
Boil for 10 minutes and serve with drawn butter and lemons.

Ingredients For Spice Mix

2 tsp dried bay leaves; broken into small pieces
2 tsp fine ground cayenne pepper
4 tsp celery seeds
4 tsp dried coriander seeds
8 tsp dried brown mustard seeds
2 tsp dried whole black peppercorns
1 tsp dried whole allspice berries
1 tsp dried whole clove buds
2 tsp dried crushed red pepper flakes
2 tsp dried thyme leaves

Mix all of these ingredients together. Place in a cheese cloth pouch and add to boiling water a few minutes before adding the rest of your ingredients. This makes 2 ounces of spice mix which is equivalent to 1 bag of Zatarains mix.
